Welcome!
In my art class, you will concentrate on the process of creating art. You will learn to think like an artist. You will use many different materials such as pencil, crayon, paint, chalk, oil pastel, and watercolors to communicate your thoughts and feelings.
I believe that students can do great work at any age, and my job is to inspire and empower them to think and work like artists. In my classroom, I am the facilitator and guide, giving students opportunities to create and solve artistic problems and get out of their comfort zone. I help students gain the skills they need to communicate their ideas effectively and to create art that is meaningful. I challenge students to try new things with hands-on learning experiences. I incorporate cross-curricular experiences organically in the art room. We work to build literacy skills through observing and talking about art, and by writing about students' own ideas and artwork. Students explore cultures from all over the world by studying their art and they gain an appreciation for new customs and traditions.
Most students will not grow up to work as artists, but the skills gained through art will serve in any future career path.
Students each year will create new projects and build on the skills learned from the previous year. All students will be able to draw, paint, sculpt, printmaking, and collage every year. The art skills, vocabulary, and materials differ for each grade level. This year students will be able to visit the art center after they complete their project. Students may choose from a wide variety of materials to create their own projects. Students will first sketch out their plan in their sketchbooks and then create by building, drawing, painting, or sculpturing. The possibilities are endless! Students will have opportunities to participate in National Art Contests and Community Service Projects.
Message to Parents!
Thank you so much for choosing St. William the Abbot School where I am also a parent of a current sixth-grade student. SWS is a wonderful place to teach, and it provides my own child with a balanced Catholic Education. Here at SWS, each child is treated as an individual. They are encouraged to reach their own potential.
I look forward to meeting you and your child. If you have any questions about the art program or anything related to the school, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I am here to help.
