Mrs. Hayes' Kindergarten Class

Dear K-2 Families,

Can you believe it is already October?!

We are doing beautifully in Kindergarten.  The children are becoming more proficient each week and our classroom is starting to run efficiently! Children now have weekly jobs, including Prayer Leader/Greeter, Clipboard Patrol, Pet Caretaker, Nurse Buddy, and Board Eraser. The children are also assigned table captain responsibilities for one week, as well. They take pride in their jobs and are becoming experts!

We have begun to practice and implement some of the center activities that will be done on a daily basis once guided reading begins. By practicing and learning the expectations now, the children will be able to work independently at those centers when I pull small groups for reading. We have learned roll-it games and how to "Write the Room" which the children LOVE!  Nothing is cuter than Kinders walking around with clipboards - they feel like big people! :)

October is one of my most favorite teaching months!  We will be learning about bats, owls, spiders and reading many fun, only-slightly-spooky stories! Some of our read-alouds for this month are White Owl, Barn Owl, non-fiction texts on spiders and bats,  Leonardo the Terrible Monster and Pumpkin Jack.  We will also be dissecting owl pellets and doing experiments with pumpkins!

We will be completing ABC Bootcamp this month and we celebrate by having an ABC Fashion Show! Paper vests will be coming home for you and your child to decorate with words and pictures! The children will wear them while they strut down the "runway" and then enjoy some special alphabet snacks!  After Bootcamp, we turn our phonics instruction to vowels and word families!  By the end of the month, we will be in our small reading groups--that's where the fun really begins!

As always, lots of fun, love and learning happening in K-2!
